Morrissey slams Smiths reissues

FOLLOWING a vitriolic NME review of the new series of SMITHS’ re-issues by Rough Trade, the man MORRISSEY was moved to send us an emotional response to the ‘Paint A Vulgar Picture’ debate. Read on, kind readers. . .

“Whilst endorsing ‘Louder Than Bombs’ as a US equivalent of ‘The World Won’t Listen’ in early ’87, I agree that this record has no place in The Smiths’ discography, and in fact destroyed The Smiths’ excellent chart record by charting at No 38,18 months ago.

“No living ex-Smith can feel happy at the re-re-re-release of ‘Louder Than Bombs’, and the friendlier Rough Trade fraternity back away shyly. If I had personally known that the wretched thing would practically receive its own chat show on Channel 4,1 would, of course, have given it a better title.

“If The Smiths’ history is to remain virtually unblemished then Rough Trade cannot and must not release another related item until at least one ex-member has been found at the balcony of his bungalow home, half-eaten by his own chihuahua.”
